A  final move was achieved in July 1998, when a purpose-built terrain was opened at the Club's present home at Lancing Manor Leisure Centre. This bald statement conceals a vast amount of planning, fund-raising and sheer

When did it all begin?   .........A short history of the Club.

In early 1993, several members of Adur District Twinning Association (ADTA) decided to try the French game of "Petanque", or "Boules" as it is probably better known in this country.

By late 1993, three intrepid ADTA members had registered themselves as "Adur Petanquers" with the British Petanque Association (BPA) - as this meant that they could play against other clubs and gain more expertise, and a terrain had been created near the "Joyful Whippet" public house at Sompting (now the "Abbot of Sompting"!), with help from Adur District Council.

The present club was formed in late 1995, with a change of name to "Adur Petanque Club", becoming a separate entity from the Twinning Association, enabling the members to take part fully in all events organised by the BPA.

More people became "hooked" and the numbers grew. The next phase included several changes: the terrain at Sompting was redeveloped for housing, forcing a temporary move to Hove and the grounds of the "Hyde Sporting Club" - however, there was a ready-made terrain there that was twice as big as the old one!

The very considerable support of Adur District Council, both in the form of Grant Aid, technical and planning advice and the granting of a 28-year lease on the new site, was the major factor in the successful Lottery bid, which was the first from the English Sports Council within Adur district, and the largest ever awarded for Boules.

In January 2001, the Club opened a second temporary terrain, and then

More recently (July 2005), this temporary terrain has been replaced by a permanent second terrain, located slightly to the north-east of our first terrain - as the site of the temporary terrain was due for re-development. This new area was built (and funded!) entirely by the Club and its members - no mean feat for a club of its size! The playing capacity remains at the 40 plus level, but the surface has been prepared to give a different playing experience.
